GBIM user guide

From installation to a clean federated model: every add-in, in the order you use them.

GBIM is a set of Revit and Navisworks add-ins for model QA and clash coordination. This guide follows the work the way a BIM coordinator does it: install once, check each model against the project standard, then run the clash loop every week until the models are clean.

The coordination loop

Coordination is a repeated loop on the latest model releases. Many teams run it weekly, around a coordination meeting; monthly runs find problems too late. Each turn of the loop updates the federated model, runs the agreed tests, groups the results, gives every issue an owner and a status, and checks the fixes in the next run.

The GBIM tool that does each step is shown under it. Steps 1 and 6 use Navisworks' own Clash Detective.

Which tool, when

HostToolWhat it is for
NavisworksClash ExportWrites the chosen clash tests, with each item's Revit IDs, to a file for Revit.
NavisworksClash SyncLive link: the clash you click opens in Revit, boxed and coloured.
NavisworksElement ClashesEvery clash of the selected items in every test; change statuses in one step.
NavisworksStatus UpdateReads returned response sheets or a status table and updates the clash statuses.
NavisworksClash MapZones (level and grid bay) coloured red, yellow and green by clash count.
NavisworksClash ReportOne Clash Response Sheet (.xlsx) per test, one folder per party.
RevitClash ImportA docked clash browser: zoom, 3D views per clash or group, write a parameter.
RevitClash SyncFollows Navisworks in one section-boxed 3D view.
RevitFlagRed flags at clicked points, to find the spot again in Navisworks.
RevitHealth Check, Warnings, Views & Sheets, Links & CoordsRead-only model health with a score and history.
RevitNaming, Parameters, Colour by Parameter, Safe Cleanup, RulesStandards against your rules workbook, safe fixes only.
RevitGUID AuditShared parameters with the wrong GUID, name or data type.
RevitLink ID, Plan BoxCopy IDs from links; section box from a plan area.
RevitExportSheets to PDF and DWG, 3D views to IFC and NWC, in one run.

Safety principles

  • Your model is never saved. No GBIM tool saves, syncs or closes a Revit or Navisworks file.
  • Changes are yours to confirm. Tools that change the model (rename, cleanup, views, statuses, flags) show what will change first and apply it as one Undo step.
  • No file is overwritten. Reports, sheets and rule workbooks get a new name or a new version; old rule files move to a history folder.
  • Nothing is guessed. When a match is doubtful (an ID that does not agree, a name used twice), the row is listed as a problem and skipped.
